The Mouse King takes his post on a small clear tumbler: grey ears with pink centers, a gold crown set at an angle, a mint coat with two rows of gold buttons and gold fringe at the shoulders. White breeches, tall black boots, and one eye closed in a look that says he is up to something.
The tumbler is straight-sided and plain, so he gets the whole stage, and whatever you pour glows behind him. Orange juice at the far end of a December morning, tree lights still on.

Why we love it
Every story needs a villain, and this one gets a seat at breakfast. Kids who know the ballet spot him right away, and kids who don’t want to know who the mouse in the crown is, which is a fine way into the story.
