A red squiggle loops all the way around the rim of each cream plate, with a pale pink stripe running just outside it and a single toadstool standing in the middle. Some caps are bright red and scattered with gold foil dots, some wear white spots above a gold-tipped stem, and some are the slim pale kind that come up in a cluster. The edge is gently fluted, the way a paper plate can be when someone has thought about it.
It’s side plate scale: a slice of gingerbread, three cookies, a small heap of appetizers being carried off toward the tree. Put one down at every seat and the quiet negotiating begins, because somebody is going to want the gold-spotted cap.
